Frequently Asked
Questions
Q: Does the cleaner nappies method harm my
baby?
A: Not as far as we can tell.
Q: How young can I start using the cleaner
nappies method?
A: From a few days old
Q: I have a bad back and can't stand like you
show in the video. Can I still use this technique?
A. You could try using a height adjustable chair
(an office chair on casters is good). Set the chair in front
of the toilet and sit towards the front. Hold your baby
between your legs in the same position as in the video.
Alternatively, sit the baby over a potty and support them if they
are unable to sit independently. If you have previously been using
the technique in the video, have the baby face away from you and
lean over, so that your face is upside down as they are already used
to.
Q: My baby used to be good at going on the
toilet, but now she is more interested in chewing her toes. What
shall I do?
A: Keep going to the toilet with your baby about every
3 hours and in time she should get back into "performing"
again.
Q: You say that baby shouldn't be hungry when
put over the toilet. I feed my baby just before, but then he is sick
when I hold him in position. What should I do?
A: Try to keep the legs apart when you hold the baby,
so that they are not pressing over the stomach. A little bit of
vomit is not a problem. Put a bib on the baby and the vomit will go
into the toilet and not on the clothes.
Q: When are the most common times a baby will
stop "performing" on the toilet?
A: 1) When baby is unwell: in this situation, use your
judgement whether baby is strong enough for you to continue to hold
them over the toilet to keep the routine going. If not, wait until
baby is better and start again.
2) When baby has discovered
something new and exciting, e.g. their feet.
3) When there are distractions,
e.g. new surroundings if you are in a new place, or a sibling
playing nearby or an attractive necklace round your neck. Try to
keep distractions to a minimum so that baby can concentrate on the
job.
